On 12 September 2020, the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, member of the political family of the European People’s Party, convened their party Congress in Vilnius. In the run-up to the forthcoming parliamentary election, Gabrielius Landsbergis, Chairman of the Party, introduced the party’s main vision calling for more power to Lithuania.
‘Lithuania will win if the Homeland Union is strong, if there is a strong coalition and strong Government. Today, we are mainly talking about principles, measures, and more effective and moderate policies that would make our state stronger. The road towards a victory of a strong country is paved with not only good intentions but also persistent work. People are tired of unfulfilled promises as if someone constantly promises you Christmas that never comes. However, people are crying out for changes. This is why our election manifest is different in that it is our contract with society. There is always a choice in politics. We therefore choose not to fool or manipulate people but rather tell the naked, though often highly inconvenient, truth. That is the only way we can focus on a joint action. Only then can we expect to rebuild our citizens’ confidence and trust in the state and each other,’ said the Chairman of the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats.
Gabrielius Landsbergis also noted that the conservative party is able to offer a different culture of politics that is much needed for Lithuania as a whole to emerge victorious.
‘In his call to fight for England, Winston Churchill did not promise to give one easy solution. What he promised was a battle for every single inch of land. He had nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. And the victory that had yet to come. He promised a hope and the truth, which constitute the strongest mix in politics. Let us therefore have hope that we can make a change and that we can win. At the same time, we should be aware that it will not be easy and that no one has a silver bullet. What we have in place is our hope that everything is achievable and that we have the will and patience to implement the change. I believe that this is the real power that our state needs today and that is needed for the victory of Lithuania,’ said Landsbergis.
